I love what Mandy Hale, the author of The Single Woman: Life, Love, and a Dash of Sass, says about being bold. She says, “You’ll learn, as you get older, that rules are made to be broken. Be bold enough to live life on your terms, and never, ever apologize for it. Go against the grain, refuse to conform, take the road less traveled instead of the well-beaten path. Laugh in the face of adversity, and leap before you look. Dance as though EVERYBODY is watching. March to the beat of your own drummer. And stubbornly refuse to fit in.”  Now that exemplifies the effervescence of being BOLD!

I often ask my clients and workshop participants what have you done or planned to do, that was so BOLD that it kept you up at night?  I usually get blank stares.  I can remember one participant saying in a small unsure voice that when she thought about bold, it was something that she got motivation from others, not that she could actually be bold herself.  My response was wow….  I thanked her for sharing such an honest statement and I asked the group how many of you can relate to what she said.  Most of the hands in the room were raised. A room full of leaders and aspiring leaders.  A room full of people who didn’t realize that they took bold steps every day, they just didn’t realize their BOLD power within.

In order to make an impact in any setting it requires that we take BOLD steps, make BOLD decisions, and live a BOLD life. Yet many of us are unsure as to how that translates to our own lives.

This story inspired me to define 8 BOLD characteristics that will lead to an improved, empowered fulfilled life of BOLDNESS.

Let’s get started!

1. In order to be BOLD we must be Confident.

We must know, like and trust who WE are; our thoughts, our voice, and our decisions.  When we are in alignment with who we are we exude confidence which is not to be confused with “cockiness” or arrogance. We are self-assured, we do not use passive language like “I hope I can do it” but “I will do it”. We are not afraid of the outcome because either way we will gain what we need. As John Maxwell says, “sometimes you win, sometimes you learn”. We understand that we contain all of the power necessary to make things happened which includes our knowledge, skills, abilities and our resources. We are BOLDLY CONFIDENT!

2. In order to be BOLD we must be Spirit Led.

We must spend time listening to our spirit which I define as our inner thoughts. We must spend time in a reflective space that will allow us to focus on the events of the day and align ourselves with the ability to process the good, the bad, the ugly, the restoration and/or the revitalization. Only through reflection can we hear from our inner spirit.  Reflection is paramount to living a BOLD life understanding that everything happens in divine order and expectancy. Christian Simpson says, “If we fail to go within, we will go without.”

3. In order to be BOLD we must Competent.

Competence is defined as having the necessary ability, knowledge, or skill to do something successfully.  In order to take BOLD steps you don’t have to have all of the answers but you need to know how to get the answers.  You may not have the complete picture but you know and understand enough to take the risk which could lead to something greater. We all have untapped and unused competence waiting to be unleashed toward BOLDNESS.

4. In order to be BOLD we must Credible.

Knowledge is not enough, we must also demonstrate credibility. People do business, volunteer and collaborate with people they know, like, and trust but they must be credible. Credibility is used as a noun to refer to the quality or property of inspiring belief. This word which is made up of five syllables and eleven letters can also be used to mean capacity for belief. We must demonstrate beyond our title or our position that we have done the research, we have the tools and the we work ethic to see the team to victory. We also have a history of experience that supports our words and actions.

5. In order to be BOLD we must Birth Ideas with Impact.

Be creative and innovative!  Think outside the box! Stand on top of the box! Throw the box away!  When we walk in BOLDNESS we can visualize the outcome even when we don’t have all of the details. We think differently and our undeveloped ideas are vibrant. Many of the previous points will cater to an out of the box type of thinking that can only lead to BOLD initiatives. Everything goes back to concept #1.

6. In order to be BOLD we must be Action Oriented

We cannot live in boldness if we are not moving and operating in action! When we are stuck in the past; past mistakes, failures, and losses, these thoughts keep us from moving toward ACTION! We are not defined by our past – good, bad or indifferent. Being action oriented allows us to thrive in a space of creating multiple bold opportunities.

Don’t submit to Procrastination you will never get started.

Don’t become Prey to limitations they are the excuses that lead to dreams deferred.

FOCUS on being action oriented which is BOLDNESS in action.

7. In order to be BOLD we must believe that Opportunities are Limitless!

We are only able to be bold if we believe that we are worthy and capable. It is only through what we believe which will determine initiative of our boldness. It’s a mindset. We must be vigilant and not allow others to place limits on us and we must be hyper-vigilant and not place limits on ourselves. The small evil voice that tell us we are not good enough, someone else is better and we are not equipped are all thought patterns that keep us from walking in our destiny toward our BOLD dreams. Those thoughts will attack and we must be prepared with a U-turn strategy to turn those thoughts around. Be your own GPS; create a path that will lead to the destination of your dreams.

8 . In order to be BOLD we must Model the way.

Once we learn the way, live the way, we must model the way. When we have transformed our lives through bold living, let’s not forget to model the way for someone else who is hanging out in the mediocre lane. It’s our responsibility to plant and nourish the seeds of boldness in others. It is through our personal transition of living a bold life we can lead someone else to their purpose. We have an obligation to lead others to their purpose through mentoring, recognizing their gifts, and holding them accountable to move toward their boldness.

Let’s create a community of BOLD like-minded, action-oriented people.
