I guess it is true, my mother was my first mindset coach. She would have us write our visions and plans, create vision boards and often times would incorporate burning incense during prayer and meditation. As I reflect back on how I got here, it’s pretty simple.  I got it from my momma and I incorporated it into my life and my business.

Mindset. It’s not the new buzz word, it is truly a lifestyle and it’s been around for centuries. As I pen this blog, I am diffusing DoTerra’s Balance and Lemon oils, listening to Pandora Classical for the Soul and sipping Dr. Clay’s Release and Recharge Tea. Ahhhhhhhhh, now this is how you start a Monday Morning!

I really turned up the notch on combining affirmations and aromatherapy more than 10 years ago when I was first diagnosed with high blood pressure.  At the time, I had a lot of stress in my life; I was working a job that created anxiety every Sunday evening and Monday morning on my drive to work I’d get sick to my stomach. You see, my mother was a chronic diabetic and was often ill.  I had just lost my fiancée after he suffered a stroke after surgery.  OH, AND I was working on my doctoral degree too. Yeah, to say I had a lot going on is an OVER statement!

But I knew that although I was working in a toxic environment, stressed, grief stricken and concerned about my mom, I had to take care of me. Quitting was not an option and I had to gain control of my health, my mind and my future. I wrote a lot of affirmations during that time, many which are in my debut book, Wanna Start a Riot? Change Affirmations, Confirmations, and Prayers.  I found comfort in aromatherapy because they would help me maintain the calmness needed so I would not  unnecessarily raise my blood pressure and to practice a state of calm.  The key word here is practice.

A mindset practice which includes aromatherapy  is great for enhancing mood, reducing anxiety, and eliminating stress. Aromatherapy combined with mindset work creates an opportunity for the user to replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts through the use of cognitive restructuring and our sense of smell.  If I know that the smell of lavender will relax me, I will reach for it instead of blowing my lid.  If I know that orange or lemon will left my spirits when I’m feeling blue. I will incorporate it into my day when I’m in traffic, before the gym or before dealing with a potentially difficult situation.

How does aromatherapy work? Did you know that people respond to the sense of smell on an emotional level more strongly than any other sense. The area of the brain associated with smell is the same area as that associated with memory. The olfactory nerves are located within the nasal cavity and respond to particular aromas.  They send the information to the part of the brain where memory and emotions lie. This area connects with another part of the brain (hypothalamus and pituitary gland) which governs our hormonal systems. These aromas trigger a variety of chemical actions within the body, including the release of specific chemicals.  Because the olfactory nerves are a direct extension of the brain’s limbic system, reaction to smell is relayed immediately.

Whenever I am working with my clients on mindset, clarity, strategy, and accountability; I prescribe a combination of aromatherapy and specific essential oils to use during our  mindset work. Combining oils with my strategies are a great way to eliminate those limiting beliefs that keep you stuck and preventing you from moving into your greatness.

Keep in mind that mindset is the foundation of all success any future success that involves moving from the comfort zone and taking a risk.
