leadership developmentWhen you become a leader, of a small team, community organization or a large company, the responsibility can be daunting.  Leadership is a large responsibility and it can be complete bedlam if not handled properly.  Being an effective leader is not a trait that’s spread abundantly among the human population. It’s kind of like the difference between being a good singer versus a great singer; some people have natural talent. It’s the same with leadership, some people are born with it and some people need developing in order to maximize their potential.   The problem with being suddenly handed the big chair is that, unless you’ve had previous experience, you might not know which of the two you are.

This is why most companies and organizations initiate leadership development programs for those who are in a management positions. You might be confident enough in your leadership abilities but are you effective? Would the organization or company’s leadership deem your leadership abilities as effective, efficient and outcome based?

There are many reasons to develop as a leader but here are two reasons how leadership development programs can help you:

a) Mirror, Mirror– Most of the time we’re blind to our own faults. A cursory self-examination will always come up with the result that you may not be perfect but you’re not that bad. That’s a completely wrong way to approach things. However, when evaluating yourself, you need to be your own worst critic. You need to take a true look in the mirror and honestly assess your abilities, and your challenges. Keep in mind,  other people are not as forgiving of your  faults. Having a faulty high opinion of oneself is a recipe for disaster – everyone’s heard of the arrogant boss or supervisor. You should identify your personal shortcomings before your subordinates do and do something about them. Leadership development programs have a strict self-assessment portion that helps you do this. Additionally, the professional coaches and/or leadership development experts can help open your eyes to any troublesome personality traits or habits that you may have.

b) Growing Pains– Most leaders learn on-the-job. It’s not exactly optimal but sometimes the best way to learn something is through experience. These learning experiences are often the problems we face at work. The problem with experiencing crisis is, sometimes we don’t think of it as a learning experience and just dismiss it as being part of the job.  Deeper examination into the problem doesn’t take place and growth doesn’t occur.  This becomes a cycle and nothing changes and no one changes for the better.  Awareness is paramount in leadership. If we don’t learn from the mistakes and make adjustments we will continue to make them.  If we use those opportunities as springboards for growth we make the best of the experience that may not have been the most ideal at the time.

Leadership development programs provide knowledge, skills and insight that will develop effective leaders in various settings. A more positive outlook and an inquisitive mind are what leadership programs encourage and they often result in leaders who know how to identify roots of problems, eliminate them at that level and develop others. Let us help you increase your leadership edge through our onsite and virtual training, coaching and growth group programs.  Growth and improvement does not just happen, it is intentional.
